The Rule of Thirds
One of the most important rules of photography is the "rule of thirds". This rule basically means that a photo is divided into nine parts where the main subject is not centered. As seen below in the photo on the left, the subject is placed in the center, while in the one on the right, it is off to the side. This makes the photo more compositional.

All photos contained within this post entitled "The Rule of Thirds" are not the property of Sam Rosenthal Photography.

High Dynamic Range Imaging
Also know as HDR, is achieved when multiple photos of the same thing are shot at different exposures and then in post processing, they are merged together into one photo. HDR basically creates a photo of the perfect exposure as seen below. This form of photography is very controversial because it is viewed as an inaccurate depiction of the real life image. While others view it as trying to get the best image possible. I do not like to use HDR and all of the photos on this blog except for the one below do not use HDR. However, the results can be amazing. (Click photo to enlarge)

Artistic Lighting
"We cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening our own" - Ben Sweetland
At first these may seem like a disco ball, but they are of colored christmas lights. I zoomed in really close with my 70-300 mm lens and then turned the lens out of focus to create these light splotches.
