Product Review: Neewer TT520 Speedlite Flash

I recently purchased one of Neewer's "TT520 Speedlite" for my Nikon D3000. The box contained a velvet case, a shoe hold for off camera use, and the flash itself. The flash fits easily on my Nikon and I found it very easy to operate. Overall I was please with the resulting photographs. The few controls the device includes are light intensity adjustments, a test button, and a mode button (M, S1, S2). One thing I noticed was that I never set the intensity above the 3rd lowest setting. When I did go above this, the photograph would be overexposed. On some more expensive models the flash can be synchronized with the camera while set on the "automatic" mode. However, it is good to experiment with manual settings. You can set the flash head itself to basically every angle from 90 to 180 degrees. Neewer does include a built in diffusor that pulls out along with a reflector flap. The two are supposed to be pulled out at the same time, however the reflector would occasionally get stuck and be difficult to get back out. The actual light (depending on the intensity) charges very quickly upon start up and in between firings. The shoe holder I mentioned above can be attached to any standard tripod. Although the Nikon D3000 model does not have wireless capabilities, I tried it with a D90 and had difficulty getting the flash to fire off camera. My advice to anyone on a budget looking for an external flash would be to go with the TT520. For its low price it is definitely something good to have until you invest in a more advanced model. The Rule of Thirds

One of the most important rules of photography is the "rule of thirds". This rule basically means that a photo is divided into nine parts where the main subject is not centered. As seen below in the photo on the left, the subject is placed in the center, while in the one on the right, it is off to the side. This makes the photo more compositional.

High Dynamic Range Imaging

Also know as HDR, is achieved when multiple photos of the same thing are shot at different exposures and then in post processing, they are merged together into one photo. HDR basically creates a photo of the perfect exposure as seen below. This form of photography is very controversial because it is viewed as an inaccurate depiction of the real life image. While others view it as trying to get the best image possible. I do not like to use HDR and all of the photos on this blog except for the one below do not use HDR. I took all of these with a my 70-300 mm lens on Nikon D3000 with a very fast shutter speed of 1/4000 to capture the detail of the moon. Also I used a high ISO to try and eliminate any noise. These shots were taken before and during the eclipse.

I put the equipment in an order as to what I think are most important. Lets run down the list.

1 Obviously the camera is the most important thing. I have a Nikon D3000 and what you most recently see on this blog is mostly the product of that.

2 Most would not agree, but a tripod is so important to have especially when you are shooting in low light and with a low shutter speed and aperture. Basically any tripod is good to have (don't really have a favorite brand), just make sure it can be adjusted in various ways and note how high it goes.

3 The lenses that you have are very important as well. The standard lens that come with the Nikon D3000 is good, but to adventure into other territory, you may want to consider getting a macro/micro lens for close detail, a wide angle lens for landscapes, and a telephoto lens for far away objects. Amazon sells a lot of these for great prices.

4 Next on our list is an external flash. This is much more powerful than the built in flash on Nikon's models. You can also diffuse the light through a variety of ways. Also on most Nikon models, you can actually use the flash wirelessly and not even have it attached to the camera!

5 Umbrella lighting is also a good source of external lighting. It is really good for studio photography like family portraits. These lights will also flash wirelessly with most Nikon models.

Elements of a Photograph

So I don't have any new photos to share so I just thought I would talk about a little photography insight. Are you familiar with the three functions of a camera that are used to produce your image? You may have seen something like an "exposure triangle" such as the one below.

On your SLR camera and with some non SLR cameras, you probably have noticed on the top dial that there are some different settings. These settings vary between the different camera models. For Nikons, the "S" stands for "shutter speed priority" and the "A" stands for "aperture priority". When you are on either of these modes, you can change either the speed at which the camera take the photo (shutter speed) or the size of the hole in which the photo is shot through (aperture or f-stop). With a low shutter speed, the camera 's shutter is held open for how ever long you set it. This can result in light being stretched out. If you have ever seen a photo of a car's headlights that are stretched out behind it, that is the result of a low shutter speed. A hight shutter speed captures things quickly, exposing the camera to little light. A wide aperture or f-stop can cause a subject to be in focus while the rest of the photo is blurred (f/5.6). With a more narrow aperture of maybe f/32, the entire photo would be in focus. ISO or ASA controls how much "noise" or grain is in a photo. This is usually found either on the settings dial or in the camera's menu. ISO of 100 is usually for good light. In less light, it is better to increase the ISO to about 1,600. It is always good to be controlling the shutter speed as well, usually 1/15 of a second.

My Polaroid camera was my most fascinating camera. You just pressed the button, it took the picture, and it printed for you right then and there. Some of the pictures I took with it were usually just for fun stuff as shown at the bottom. My main focus was usually our animals. Now there is even a Polaroid SLR! Rufus is part doxin part beagle. He is 2 years old and has short legs. We had been fostering him for a while, but have since adopted him.

He gets along well with Edward, Clementine, and Lulu. However, he doesn't get along with the cat. The other dogs, even Jorge, are afraid of the cat.

He loves to be held and walked and he is even housebroken.

His bedtime is 7:00 PM. He will sleep anywhere as long as he is with someone and somewhere comfy.

Shutter Speed Experiment

By setting an SLR camera to "Shutter Priority", you can then control the amount of time the lens stays open. Here I set the shutter speed to about 5 seconds and used my phone to write my name in the air. Because the lens was open, it took in the light of my phone.

If you are going to try this:

1) Find a dark room.

2) Put your SLR camera on a tripod and set it to shutter priority (the "S" setting on most Nikons).

3) Set the shutter speed according to how long your name is (try and use a short nickname).

4) Have someone press the shutter button and you will hear the shutter sound then start.

5) Write non symmetrical letters backwards, (B, C, D, E, F, G, J, K, L, P, Q, R, S, Z).

6) Start from right to left and use all capitals (go slow or you will have really faded letters).

7) If you name is being cut off by the camera, move it back and crop out excess stuff later.

Photographer of the Month

Last semester we started to have a "photographer of the month" where a unique photo would be made into a large size, put in the entrance of the main school building with a plaque about me and the photo under the photo, so the 2nd photographer of the month in all of school's history has gone to me. The photo above will remain there for all of February!(Plaque under photo)

In most of the pictures, I increased the saturation and sharpened either the whole photo are sections. Shadows and lighting were also manipulated and I air brushed a few minor details. The hot air balloon looks a little too saturated because when it was printed it looked more like the original picture.
